There are several challenges, as some crops are more challenging than others to grow, however, almost all commodities can be produced organically including organic tobacco. Organic cover crops and crop rotation promotes a balanced host and predator relationship. All organic nutrients and residues produced on an organic farm are recycled back into the soil.
The first few years during the transition period of organic production are the most difficult. Organic farmers have to follow the standards required whereby the lands must be managed using organic practices for not less than 36 months before harvesting their first certified organic crop. During this time weed and insect populations also adjust accordingly.
