Biodegradable smoking filters are a great option for smokers. Especially when you consider the harm tobacco causes the environment, and how it goes beyond cigarette litter and air pollution.
The growing, manufacturing and delivering can cause severe damage to the environment and, in addition, is also the leading cause of preventable disease and death. The life cycle of tobacco from start to finish is a detrimental damaging and polluting process. That’s why we choose to farm organic tobacco
Growing and curing tobacco are some of the major causes of deforestation, due to forests being cleared for the plantations and when curing tobacco wood needs to be burned. Deforestation causes soil erosion, disrupted water cycles, reduction in soil fertility and also affects climate change. For every 300 cigarettes produced, one tree is used to cure the leaves of the tobacco.
Besides large amounts of water and energy used to grow and process tobacco, there is also transportation and shipping, which causes carbon emissions. Smoke from burning tobacco known as environmental smoke, comprises over 7000 toxic chemicals that pollutes both outdoor and indoor environments, and even when a tobacco product is extinguished the environment remains toxic as the residue smoke accumulates on surfaces, mixes with dust and other objects.
Cigarette butts in particular are the most littered item on the planet. a survey showed that around 75% of smokers dispose of their cigarette butts on the ground and out of car windows. This on average amounts to around 1.70 billion kilograms of butts that end up as toxic waste annually. Such toxic exposure poisons fish, contaminates water and the nicotine in the butts are lethal to animals that eat it.
Smokers are always going to smoke, that’s why switching to biodegradable smoking filters, will help with doing your part towards saving the environment.
